Sherry Philips Discusses her Role as Educator and Reveals her New Endeavors as Poet, Storyteller, Novelist and Illustrator

Sherry Philips sits down with Cambridge Publishing in a tell-all interview

ALLEN, TX, July 7, 2010 /High School PR News/ --"Start with a child when he's young and [give him] the desire to learn—show him how important it is and as he gets a bit older...help him to understand how much he already knows." This is the philosophy upon which Sherry Elizabeth Philips has built her business - Miss Sherry's Studies and Enrichment Program - and the fundamental basis for her success as both teacher and author. In her personal and professional lives, Ms. Philips has proven that the determination to learn is the greatest educational weapon one can wield—and she continues to demonstrate her dedication to this modality of teaching on the eve of her 40th year in education. This past month, Ms. Philips sat with the editors of Cambridge Publishing to discuss her rise into curricula development and to reveal her newest professional endeavors.

Like many, Sherry Philips knew what she wanted to do from an early age. Her intense passion for the ideals of teaching and education would later lead her to become the first from either side of her family to graduate from college. She drew upon her inner ambition, as well as the support of her mother, to pave a unique path and achieve her dreams. "My father passed away before my 16th birthday," she shared with Cambridge. "I was devastated by his death and not sure if I had what it would take to reach my goal without him by my side. But I knew, in my heart, that Dad had believed in me and my dream to teach." Ms. Philips was named a Birmingham Scholar and - along with holding down various summer jobs in banking, publishing and teaching - she would ultimately fund her own undergraduate work and graduate at the top of her class with a dual degree in English and art from East Texas A&M University, as well as become a certified teacher at all levels of education. It was this period of her life that would later inspire Ms. Philips to establish Miss Sherry's Studies and Enrichment Program.

From personal experience, Ms. Philips asserts that self-confidence, commitment to hard work and personal determination are the three most effective tools of any successful student. The principal undertaking at Miss Sherry's Studies and Enrichment Program is to equip students - aged three to 72 - with such tools utilizing her customized curricula and a good old-fashioned dose of encouragement. "Ms. Sherry's Enrichment Program," she said, "helps the educational process. It has much to do with building self-esteem. To me, my program is more a way of life...They are all learners and they're - each and every one - very important." In addition to overseeing the personal development of her students, Ms. Philips specializes in the following subjects of instruction: reading, English literature, science, creative writing, studio art, research and mathematics including algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus and geometry. She prepares her students for scholastic aptitude tests and offers distance learning in all areas. Additionally, Ms. Philips has worked with disabled students in the field of life skills. She noted that the greatest professional reward is being able to see the personal and academic improvements her students have made over the course of their time with her.

Personal evolution, self-expression—these are the goals that Ms. Philips has set for her students. It is not surprising, then, that she, herself, has undergone a similar transformation over recent years. Inspired largely by the love of her close friend, Maxine Carpenter, Ms. Philips has been transformed into poet, storyteller and novelist. "My writing style is...I don't know any better way to say it than it's just words [coming] straight from the heart," she said. "It is very straight forward, as far as what is happening in my writing, but it requires a lot of thinking. Hopefully the reader gets a lot more [out of it] than what the words say." She went on to read an excerpt from one of her stories:

The ride to Ms. Rose's plantation was quite pleasant. The early spring flowers spilled their fragrances in the air and I drank them in. Nothing smelled better with Papa's pipe tobacco than the perfume of sweet iris and honeysuckle on the fences. In the shaded path, I snuggled up to Papa as the air was still nippy with the memory of winter and the promise of a beautiful spring. I shall treasure those rides forever.

Ms. Rose Mae had told me once that the everyday memories and small things would one day be the most treasured things in our lives. I think I understand the truth of that when I wrap my hands around Papa's arm and feel his strength and gentleness all in one breath. Treasures—yes, these are the treasures I shall carry with me in my heart, where no one can ever take them from me.

In her story, the character of Ms. Rose Mae has been created from Ms. Philips' memories of her beloved friend, Maxine. In fact, "I think most all of my writings have been for her," she shared, pausing for a moment. "They are messages to her...I just feel like she has always been part of me. Whether [or not] we were twin spirits, I don't know if such a thing exists. She has been such a big part of me; it's like half of me is gone. So that's what I do to fill the other half. I write."
