Karen S. Branscum Honored for Accomplishments in Nursing
Karen S. Branscum is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a certification as a registered nurse
SOMERSET, KY, October 04, 2010 /High School PR News/ -- Karen S. Branscum has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in patient care and nursing.
With 14 years of experience in her field, Ms. Branscum is driven by her desire to help others. She serves the Lake Cumberland District Health Department as a nurse specialist II. Acting as a community liaison, she educates students on teen pregnancy and spreads drug awareness. She also performs homeland security duties and handles emergency response procedures. In addition, Ms. Branscum is a school nurse at Somerset City Schools, responsible for treating ill students and assisting staff members. She conducts vision, hearing and immunization assessments, and administers medication, nebulizers and inhalers.
She was recognized by her local newspaper when it published one family's letter of gratitude for her assistance. After she came upon a man in need, she was required to perform ventilation and CPR to save his life. Due to her aid, the man lived for three days, giving his family time to be with him before his death. As a result, she was later also recognized by the health department as Employee of the Month.
At Eastern Kentucky University, Ms. Branscum is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a certification as a registered nurse. She has already earned an Associate of Science in nursing and a RN-BSN degree. A member of the Kentucky School Nurses Association, she volunteers at the Cumberland Heights Church of God as well as community fundraisers and health fairs. In the future, she intends to complete a master's degree, become an educator or clinical supervisor at a community college, or work in the research field.
