Carlsbad Non-Profit, Independent School Takes Action on Local and Global Engagement Curriculum
Pacific Ridge School Partners with the City of Carlsbad for Service Learning Project to Develop Safe Walking Trails and Support Outdoor Restoration Efforts
CARLSBAD, CA, June 05, 2009 /High School PR News/ -- Earlier this year, students and faculty from Pacific Ridge School (http://www.pacificridge.org), an independent, non-profit school in Carlsbad that fosters academic excellence, ethical responsibility and global engagement to prepare students for college and a purposeful life, partnered with the City of Carlsbadfs Trails program and the Center for Natural Lands Management to repair heavily eroded trails and develop diversion channels to avert soil erosion on trails in La Costa in the area overlooking Box Canyon. The collaborative trails restoration project is just one of many service learning projects developed and executed by Pacific Ridge School students to broaden the scope of their education. All middle and upper school students at Pacific Ridge School are enrolled in a service learning class where they form groups and commit to an action plan to impact an issue that is of local, national or global relevance.
"It is our mission, if not duty, to expand upon the core school subjects and integrate classes that develop studentsf understanding of the value of helping others," explained Dr. Eileen Mullady, head of school for Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad. "Through the Pacific Ridge School service learning curriculum, students have the opportunity to help others and support causes that matter most to them."
Liz Ketabian, park planner and trails manager for the City of Carlsbad, added, "We welcome the participation of Pacific Ridge School and support its mission to have students globally and locally engaged. While the city is the obvious beneficiary of their efforts, it is our hope that the students will bring their friends and family to this and other trails in the city."
Pacific Ridge School students began development of mission statements and action plans for their service learning projects at the beginning of the 2008-2009 academic year, and presented the plans for their projects to the school community in early November. The scope of service learning projects ranges from environment and energy issues to non-profit and community involvement. On May 14, 2009, Pacific Ridge School held an event to honor the efforts put forth by each student group. Students presented their service learning projects through videos, slide shows, posters and displays. For more information on Pacific Ridge School, visit http://www.pacificridge.org.
