TransitionMap.org Website Answers 'Where Do We Go From Here?'

A revitalized transitionmap.org answers questions and encourages give-and-take among students with autism and developmental disabilities, families, educators and service providers about transitioning from school to adult life.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA, November 22, 2008 /High School PR News/ -- As her son, Teddy Parashes made his way through Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, mom Cheryl pondered the circumstances of his life following graduation. Teddy has autism. His family wanted him to have the same opportunities as his classmates.

As Teddy moves closer to his graduation day, Cheryl and thousands of other parents of teens with autism and developmental disabilities envision bright futures, but how do they help their children transition to a rich adult life?

Where will they find jobs? What social and recreational opportunities will they have? What about transportation? If they need professional support and therapies during their adult years, where do they get them? What happens when they want to live on their own? What will happen when we are unable to take care of them?

For Cheryl and thousands of parents like her across southeastern Pennsylvania, information about handling these transition years is one click away. Developed by parents of teens transitioning from special education to adult life, the website www.transitionmap.org offers practical county-specific information for families.

"We give parents, teachers, case managers and others clear and concise information they can use," explains Debbie Lord, KenCrest director of clinical services, who led the website redesign effort over the past year. "The parents who started this project did a brilliant job. They knew what kinds of information they needed and the first parent/editor, Jennifer Graham, researched and updated the site with skill and passion."

"The redesigned website keeps the best of the site we are replacing: information and news that parents and professionals they can rely on, topical e-newsletter and brief e-alerts" Lord says. "We will be adding other features as we go: blogging, a password-protected section to allow for more confidential chat and resources for sale."

Although KenCrest, a large provider of community-based services in the Philadelphia area, sponsors the site, "This is the community's site," Lord emphasizes. "We want everyone—parents, teachers, social workers, service providers—to join in providing information, use www.transitionmap.org to spread the news of events and new services, and share successes."

"The more people participate, the better transitionmap.org will become."
