Based on statistics from the US Department of Education, approximately 5,325,000 students graduated from college and high school in 2008. If 75% of the disposable gowns sold found their way into a landfill in a given year, the following figures would be applicable: 3,000,000 gowns discarded annually, producing 1,500 tons of waste each year, or taking up 300,000 cubic feet of landfill each year. That's enough to fill 9 ½ Boeing 747's and is equal to the amount of earth removed for the St. Louis Arch Foundation.
