W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Celebrates 20 Years of Developing Youth Business Leaders
For 20 years, W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute has provided technology and entrepreneurship training to prepare the next generation of business and community problem solvers. This Princeton-based non-profit successfully transfers an Ivy League education to inner-city young people.
PRINCETON, NJ, September 25, 2008 /High School PR News/ -- W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute is celebrating its twentieth anniversary with a slate of new initiatives, including a completed pilot program for middle school students and a redesigned website with more interactive and user-friendly features for parents, faculty and donors.
W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute was founded in 1988 to provide courses in business, technology, leadership, and community service for high-achieving youth attending secondary schools. Housed at Princeton University, the not-for-profit organization aims to solve some of society's most intractable problems by developing a cadre of leaders and activist scholars with a sense of community purpose.
This year, the nonprofit organization introduced its Junior Achievers Academy. Recognizing a decline in the number of eligible high school students - especially young black men - this new effort tackles negative influences through rigorous leadership and educational training for 7th and 8th grade students.
"These initiatives are just a few of the steps we're taking to bring our organization into the twenty-first century," said Dr. Sherle Boone, the Scholars' founder and chief executive officer. "We're very proud of all the students who have come through our program, and have already begun to see the fruits of their labor in society."
The updated web presence boasts an interface that allows parents, students and alumni to click-through online applications, program curricula and course descriptions. Additionally, the institute has added new sections and linked to social media sites, enabling visitors to follow the institute's media coverage and interact with each other.
The improvements come on the heels of a successful capital campaign that raised money for the summer enrichment program. "This is a very exciting time for DuBois Scholars, and I'm ecstatic to see us reaching out to communicate to new generations in every suitable medium," said Jasaun Boone, an institute alumnus, board member and son of the organization's founder.
