/High School PR News/ - MCHENRY, MD, February 19, 2006 - Millions of college-bound kids and their parents sit transfixed in front of their televisions sets as America's winter sports heroes battle for Olympic medals. Yet most viewers have no idea they can actually earn an accredited degree in Adventure Sports including Olympic events such as Alpine Skiing and Snow Boarding.
"A huge segment of the student population loves the outdoors, especially winter sports, and simply doesn't have a clue they could earn a real college degree in a subject they love," says "Mountain Man" Mike Logsdon, director of Adventure Sports at McHenry, Md.-based Garrett College. "Even more surprising is that our kids actually get jobs in this field when they graduate," says Logsdon, a former physics professor and designer of the first Adventure Sports curriculum in the United States.
Millions of kids and their parents are thinking about college right now as deadlines for federal financial aid packages rapidly approach.
While students learn the twists, turns and safety issues of Alpine Skiing and Snow Boarding, they also must take other courses that make them well-rounded in Adventure Sports and ready to enter the leisure recreational field.
Logsdon says the kids find the program a "breath of life" because they go from being unsure about what to study, and suddenly they're immersed in a program that has them doing what they love. "Parents are overjoyed, too," says Logsdon. "Instead of an undecided, reluctant or sullen teenager, you've got a kid who's literally running with enthusiasm to attend classes."
The program inspires kids because "we give them the outdoors as a classroom," says Logsdon. "They learn at a very impressionable age, firsthand lessons about leadership, using good judgment, risk management and self-discipline. More important, they learn about confidence in themselves. And that goes a long way in helping them become successful adults."
